Fire Appeal and Thank You

Category: Belantikan Conservation Programme | Date: Feb 28 2008 | By: admin

Stephen has been at the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve for the last few days but he sent a message saying that the streets in Pangkalan Bun, where the Orangutan Foundation office is, are hazy with smoke and there is still a very high risk to the forests. For those of you who haven’t seen Stephen’s last post (Fires in Tanjung Puting National Park), because of the maintenance work on this website, please have a read. A big thank you to everyone who has donated to our appeal for buying fire beaters. Unfortunately the “lastest donations box” isn’t working yet so we can’t see who has donated but we will be thanking you as soon as we receive notification. Please help us with this appeal. Stephen has asked for a $2 donation from each reader. The beaters costs around $1.50 and the extra money will go towards buying hand sprayers which are used for dousing beaten, but still hot, embers. We need to be prepared so that if more forest catches on fire we can tackle them as quickly and effectively as possible. Thank you.

On to more positive aspects of orangutan conservation! Please see the information and photos below from Togu Simorangkir of Yayorin (our Indonesian partner organisation) about the sustainable rubber cultivation that the Belantikan team have been establishing.

Over to Togu…

“We do not have a full-scale rubber cultivation. What we do is agroforestry with rubber as main plants. In the agroforestry system, we mix different plants in one area like vegetables, fruit tree, gaharu and rubber. This way, the community can enjoy the harvest from short and long harvest.

First, we provide training for community and after that we make one demonstration plot. Now some farmers already duplicate the system in their own lands. Attach are the pictures of training, nursery and maintenance of the agroforestry.

well, i am confused about the problems you say you have with your donations page - i donated $10.00 yesterday to the fire fighting effort, and it worked ok as far as i could tell. are you saying that the donations are not showing up for you?

orangutanfoundation, on 28 Feb 2008

Dear Ann. Thank you very much for making a donation and sorry about the confusion. People are able to make donations - that part is working fine. It is the box that shows us when a donation has been made that isn’t working - so at the moment we don’t know how many donatons have been made unless people leave a comment telling us. This should be sorted out soon.

oh, ok.
so you get the correct amount of money donated, you just don’t know how many donors or individual donations there were? i hope you are getting all the money that is donated to you-

We sincerely apologise for the disruptions to services. The donations tracking functions will be restored as soon as possible - we are continuing with normal weekly donations reports to all bloggers via email to keep the recipients informed of all donations.

FYI, I donated $10 a few days ago. Please make sure the Orangutan Foundation gets it!

This is a great program. I’ve not heard of agroforesty before but if it keeps the forests intact and allows the human animals to grow plants they can use for cash crops or food, then it seems a good solution.

Cathy, from the Orang Foundation emailed me after I told them of the pay pal problems earlier this morning. She is looking into it. I had just read about companion planting, where you grow vegetables, flowers, and herbs all mixed together in the same plot. This post reminds me of that, great that the garden always has something to offer, at any given time. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to put this post together with all the great info and photos. I’m praying for rain. Big time.

I posted comments today about the emergency fire appeal fund in the Washington Post.com I’m trying to get the word out anyway I can. Very worried about these brush fires and lack of rain. I’ll make another donation tomorrow. Please anyone who makes a donation, under special instructions, put for the Orangutan Blog, fire fund. Thank you.

I’m not rushing you for another post Stephen, you’ve got your hands full. Just want you to know I’m praying for rain there and very worried about the people and our orangs.
